The College of Saint Rose Student Events Board (SEB) hosted a Week of Wizardry event from Sept. 24-28. Week of Wizardry was a week long series of events inspired by the “Harry Potter” series, and there were five events. Monday was house sorting and triwizard tournament. Tuesday was wandmaking. Wednesday was wizard classes. Thursday was paint and sip, and Friday was The Yule Ball as a finale.

To kick off the week, students were able to be sorted into their Hogwarts houses. Upon arriving to the event, students were given a sheet in which they ranked what qualities they valued most. Based on a key, students were sorted into one of the four Hogwarts houses: Gryffindor, Slytherin, Ravenclaw or Hufflepuff.

Once everyone was given their house, students sat with their housemates and participated in a triwizard tournament, a series of “Harry Potter” themed games inspired by the fourth book’s actual triwizard tournament where contestant compete in three magical competitions. Although the games were not as intense as dragons or underwater mermaids, students were highly energized in Quidditch pong and “Harry Potter” trivia.

On the second day, there were craft supplies for students to create a wand to fit their wizard persona.

“I had a wonderful experience,”  said Alexis Till, a freshman and avid Harry Potter fan who appreciated being able to be creative. “[SEB] put in so much work to make it such a great event. It was so much fun to be able to make my own wand and I will definitely go to another event like this one.”

Wednesday’s wizarding classes featured mini craft lessons inspired by the classes taken by Hogwarts students in the series. For example, Herbology is the class at Hogwarts where students learn about magical plants and Potions is where they learn recipes and methods in potion making.

SEB made it their own by using crafts supplies on theme with those classes. For Herbology, students made mini terrariums with succulents. For potions, they made shaken glitter jars to look like magical potions.

“It was truly a great experience to attend classes that made me feel like a wizard,” said freshman Megan Frederick, who cited this event as her favorite. “It was hectic at times, but worth it to have a little piece of magic in our muggle school” she said.

Thursday was paint and sip with “Harry Potter” themed pictures.

The week concluded with Friday’s Yule Ball. In the “Harry Potter” universe, the Yule Ball is a formal dance. Saint Rose’s Yule Ball celebrated the end and success of the weeks event.

The Harry Potter themed Week of Wizardry was a success and many students enjoyed it.

“Overall, these are some of the best events I’ve attended here,” said Ode Odendhal, another avid Harry Potter fan. “I’ve been a Harry Potter fan for the majority of my life, and I feel like it was a pretty good fan experience, whether you’re casual or hardcore.”
