Last chance for a dance

Student Association (SA) held a prom event called Save the Last Dance at Glen Sanders Mansions in Schenectady on April 20.

Students checked in at Saint Joe’s to verify their age and ensure safe travels. Driving to or from the event was prohibited and those without IDs could not partake in drinking alcohol. Each student over 21 was limited to two alcoholic drinks for the night.

Students and chaperones took buses to the Glen Sanders mansion. The mansion provided a river-side view where many students could be seen taking photos.

“Honestly I did not want to go to my highschool prom but I like this one.. It’s nice being older and doing it,” said Anna James, a student attending with her friends.

The night began with starters like cheese and crackers and drinks like dirty shirley temples and soda in the bar area. It then transitioned to the ballroom, where dinner and dancing began. A taco and pasta bar were located on either side of the room and ice cream followed shortly after for dessert.

Dancing began halfway through the night with the DJ playing throwbacks like Watch Me Whip

by Silento, Love Story by Taylor Swift, Baby by Justin Bieber, and Cupid Shuffle by Cupid. When students weren’t dancing they were taking photos at the photo booth with props or enjoying the patio view.

Towards the end of the night eboard members of Student Association were called up and given flowers, which brought some to tears. They spoke of their appreciation and love for the students.

Eboard member Glenjanee Robertson had this to say, “I feel like it’s important that, with the school closing, everyone’s really really stressed out- 21 credits, trying to transfer, teach-out plans, all these different things being thrown at us within the matter of 5 months,” she said, “We just needed a break.”

The night ended with a raffle before students boarded the bus to go back home. The return

home was delayed due to some students finding their own ride home and they will be receiving student conduct emails as a result.

Many of the students that attended had an even better time than they had imagined, and felt the dance was a much needed celebration before the closure.

“Denise’s speech for us, the SA eboard members, was very touching. It was nice to get your roses,” said Kiyanna Diamond, an eboard member of SA.

Laughter, tears, and a bit of stress decorated the night in true Saint Rose fashion. Students of all kinds came together to dance for one of the last big events thrown by Saint Rose.
