Game On: Students get laser focused

RA Taya Ryan and RA D’Andre Little hosted a fun late-night program of laser tag for students on the campus green to enjoy this past Thursday with a lot of students participating.

The event was held from 7 p.m. until 10 p.m. and during that time students turned the campus green into a battlefield.

When I arrived at the campus green they had music playing, lots of tents set up, and a table full of laser tag guns.

Two representatives from the laser tag company, run by an alum of the school, were there to present and give students a rundown of the equipment and the rules of the game. They had professional laser guns that had quite a bit of weight to them as well as a scope that helped participants zoom in on their opponents.

After we got the rundown of the game, we were let loose to play the first round of laser tag. There were different game modes students could play, there was simply just shooting the opposite team and eliminating them, then we played a round of capture the flag, and one where they set up checkpoints where you would have to keep all checkpoints from being the opposite team’s color (there was team blue and team red). I played about four rounds of laser tag but I know many students played for longer, as the event lasted until 10 p.m..

Many times the instructors from laser tag and the RAs would join in on the fun with students trying to help one team or another.  Let’s just say, friends and enemies were made.

“We wanted to bring laser tag back as a way for residents to have fun and expel some energy. We had done this program at the beginning of the year and wanted to bring it back full circle,” said Ryan in an email.  “The event was supposed to be something fun for students to enjoy,” she said.

We ended up taking a few breaks in between rounds due to the intense cardio. Pizza was provided to give us our energy back.

“My favorite part about the event was hearing all of the screaming and people enjoying themselves,” Ryan said.

Although laser tag was a competitive experience, it was so fun to be able to participate as the semester is winding down.

As for future events, there will be chalk, bubbles, and freeze pops on Friday May 3, from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. on the campus green.
