Men’s Basketball

Starting off the final semester, the men’s basketball team is 7-11 overall. On Jan. 13, the team traveled to Adelphi University. Junior forward Nuha Sagnia put on a show with a career high of 22 points along with leading the Golden Knights with nine rebounds and two blocks in the tough fought matchup. Junior Tristan Jefferies and Dante Weise each contributed 12 more points for Saint Rose. The Golden Knights had fallen to the Panthers 71-81. 

The Golden Knights returned home on Jan. 16 to take on Southern New Hampshire. The Golden Knights had impressive numbers across the board for the team. Junior, Tristan Jefferies, had a team high of 17 points on the Knights along with Trey Boyd finishing with 15 points after coming off the bench. Freshman, Dante Weise, tallied 12 points, six rebounds and seven assists in the matchup against the Penmen along with Freshman Christian Pierre-Louis recording 11 points and 6 rebounds. Regardless of the Golden Knights falling behind with less than 10 minutes in regulation, Weise and Boyd had scored 9 of the 14 points which led Saint Rose to a victory over SNHU. 

On Jan. 20, Saint Rose was on the road again to play against New Haven. Once again, Tristan Jefferies had led the team with 12 points and six rebounds. The freshman duo; Christian Pierre-Louis and Trey Boyd III, had combined 20 points on the night. The Golden Knights fought to the very end but ended with a deficit 53-48. 

On Jan. 24, The Golden Knights were back on the road in Massachusetts visiting Assumption University. The Golden Knights took the victory in a triple overtime game, Freshman Boyd hit a 3-point buzzer beater to send the game into overtime. Saint Rose topped the Greyhounds 18-10 in the third overtime to take the win. Boyd finished the night with 25 points, five rebounds and four steals. Tristan Jefferies recorded a season high of 29 points along with 6 rebounds. Two Golden Knights also tallied up a double double. 

The Golden Knights return home on Jan. 27 for their Hoops4Hope game to support breast cancer awareness along with women’s health. 

On Jan. 27, The Golden Knights hosted Pace University for their Hoops4Hope game. With a season-high of 28 points, 18 of which came in the second half, Ata Tugut led the Golden Knights. Saint Rose embarked on a 13-2 run in the last four minutes and thirty seconds of the game to complete the comeback win. With 19 seconds remaining in the game, rookie guard Boyd made a jumper in the paint to give Saint Rose a 73-71 edge. Turgut’s free throw and a steal by graduate player Jefferies in the final seconds, guaranteed the Golden Knights’ victory. 

Boyd’s three free throws gave Saint Rose the advantage as they fought back into the game in the second half.

Women’s Basketball

Saint Rose Women’s basketball has been showing off in their final season. 

On Jan. 13, the Golden Knights traveled to Long Island to face off against Adelphi University in a NE10 conference match. Sophomore Kaelah Carter, led the team with 14 points to push the Golden Knights to victory. Payton Graber and Maddisyn Mahoney, each recorded 13 points. Sophomore Aniya McDonald-Perry, has broken double digits in rebounds in the last three games. The victory over Adelphi marked just another NE10 competitor off their list of teams to beat. 

On Jan. 16, The Golden Knights faced off against their biggest NE10 competitor, Southern New Hampshire. Junior Maddisyn Mahoney, had led the team with 14 points and seven rebounds. Payton Graber also recorded double digit points with 12 points on the night. Catherine Finnerty managed eight points while McDonald-Perry was right behind with seven points in the matchup. The Golden Knights were down by double digits but were able to comeback in the second half of the game leading to a victory over SNHU. This puts the Golden Knights at number 3 in the NE10 standings right behind Assumption. 

On Jan. 20, the women’s team was back on the road against the New Haven Chargers. Mahoney was the lead scorer for the Golden Knights once again with 11 points. Kaelah Carter and Syrita Faraj, combined, scored 17 points. McDonald-Perry, Catherine Finnerty, and Harmony Philo, all scored 6 points each, leading to another Golden Knights win.

The Golden Knights were on the road in Massachusetts against Assumption University. Syrita Faraj along with Graber, scored 13 points each to try to push the team closer to another victory. Maddisyn Mahoney also put up double digits to add to the scoreboard. The Assumption Greyhounds out scored the Golden Knights 54-50. 

On Jan. 27, The Golden Knights hosted Pace University for their Hoops4Hope game.The women’s basketball team defeated Pace in a vital Northeast-10 Conference game. The Golden Knights took an early lead after scoring 10 of the first 12 points. Saint Rose never fell behind in the 71-57 victory. Syrita Faraj, a junior guard, led five Golden Knights in double figures. With 18 points and 8 rebounds, Faraj finished ahead of sophomore forward McDonald-Perry, who had a double-double of 15 points and 10 rebounds.

The Golden Knights next match up is Jan. 30 at Franklin Pierce University.

Track and Field

The Golden Knights traveled to Utica on Jan. 12, with the Men’s team placing 10th overall while the Women claimed 12th. The top two finishers for the men’s team were Reese Casinelli along with Trevon Walker each earning a second place finish. Casinelli once again broke a Saint Rose record of 1:06:63 in the 500 meter while Walker also recorded the fifth best mark in school history for the men’s long jump. 

Three Golden Knights placed fourth, sixth, and eighth in the 60-meter dash, respectively, with times of 7.11 seconds for Matai Hazel, 7.19 seconds for Shemar Delphin, and 7.48 seconds for Dionis Best. In the 200m, Hazel (23.03) and Delphin (23.33) would take fifth and seventh place. With a throw of 14.10 meters, Jalen George recorded the fourth-longest weight throw in program history.  

In the women’s long jump (4.96 meters), Gisella King led Saint Rose with a third-place effort. She also finished seventh in the 500 meters (1:26.83). Zoe Harris again placed in the top eight today, finishing fifth in the 60-meter (8.34) and sixth in the 200-meter (27.89) events. 

On Jan. 19, at the NYC Gotham Opener, held at the Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex on Staten Island, the College of Saint Rose track and field teams each had a number of excellent performances in the field events.

For the Saint Rose men, the highlight of the day came from Trevon Walker, who placed fourth in the long jump (6.35 meters). In addition to placing eighth in the long jump (6.20m), Keenan Wood also took sixth place in the triple jump (12.50m).

Jalen George, finished 16th in the shot put (10.99m) and 13th in the weight throw (12.03m). Additionally, Brandon Clarke placed 24th in the shot put (8.94m).

Reese Casinelli, placed fourth in the 400 meters in the lanes, clocking up at 50.22 seconds. In 51.69, Matai Hazel finished 17th in the 400 meters.

To complete the men’s results, Matthew Waruch finished 14th in the 800 meters (1:59.38), D’Andre Little finished 16th in the 60-meter hurdles (12.03), and Shemar Delphin finished 17th in the 60-meter dash (7.35). Emma Crahan placed 12th in the shot put (8.93m) and 17th in the weight throw (9.20m) for the ladies. Due to her great performance in both events, Gisella King placed 13th in the long jump (4.78m) and 22nd in the 400m (1:01.79). Sara Fitzgerald also placed 20th in the 800 meters (2:29.82).

NE10 All Conference 

Seven Golden Knight student athletes have been honored with Fall 2023 Academic All Conference honors selected by the NE10 Conference. In order to be eligible the athlete must have played in at least half of the teams competition season and must maintain a GPA of 3.3. Congratulations to the seven athletes, Brooke Lannon (cross country), Jessica Vargas (Volleyball), Nick Koenig (Men’s Soccer), Victor Boje Henriksen (Men’s Soccer), and all from the Women’s soccer team; Mia Klammer, Pia Bozic and Sanna Rein.
