The College Of Saint Rose students gathered together in Saint Joseph Hall to attend an event held every year to recognized performing arts. The Saint Rose Music Awards was hosted on Friday, Nov. 20. Students from The College performed their talents individually or in a group. There was a combination of singers, dancers, bands, and beat boxers.
The Saint Rose Music Awards welcomed all students to bring out their formal attire and support their fellow peers. The event was no charge for students. Saint Joseph’s hall was filled with dance, music and loud chatter from the students talking amongst themselves during the intermissions of the event. There was also food and drinks provided for all guest to enjoy. Eighty people attended the event.
The entertainers all contributed a different type of talent to the night. The audience were entertained by five performances; Cobblestone, The Girls Next Door, The Other Guys, Knightz In Motion, and Standby. The first group that went on set the bar and assured the audience that the night was going to be a great.
The Girls Next Door sang the song “Love Me Like You Do” by Ellie Goulding. The crowd went wild when recognizing the song as they sung along and cheered for the a capella girl group. The group has participated in the Saint Rose Music Awards for seven plus years. They have also won many awards. The eight girls in this group are very used to participating in the awards show, and perform their best each time.
“There was lots of energy, the crowd reacted well and the girls and they were really in tune with each other,” said Samantha Quimvy, president of The Girls Next Door.
A newly formed band with four music industry majors, Standby, performed an original song for the audience.
“The performance went really well we nailed each song without any hiccups,” Schmidt said.
The group formed this past September and as a new group it was great publicity for them.
“We got great reactions especially to the first song because it was original,” Evans said.
There are four members of the group; Tom Evans the drummer; Tyler Schmidt the rhythm guitarist and vocalist; Joe Benevento the bassist and Liam Davis the lead guitarist and vocalist of the group.
“We Played it great and jammed out had fun, like in practice,” Benevento said.
The Student Event Board have organized and hosted the Saint Rose Music Awards for many years. This event shines a bright light on the talented people in the college and performing arts as a whole.
In between performances the Student Events Board congratulated a group or performer with an award. There was a total of eight awards given out. When entering Saint Joseph Hall there were opportunities for all guest to participate in a raffle to win a prizes throughout the night. Also they gave the audience a chance to get on the stage a show of their best dance moves.
Towards the end of the night the audience was able to vote for the team or individual they felt performed the best. With a total vote of 41 votes the Knightz In Motion hip hop dance team won the people’s choice award.
“When I heard there was a dance team performing I was excited because I thought there was only musical performers, but that brought something new and exciting to the stage,” said Dasia Trust.
