Sabor Latino hosted its third annual Dominican Independencia celebration Saturday, Feb. 16 at 7 p.m. in Saint Joseph’s Hall. The club had just recently sponsored its first big event Descubrimiento. This is Sabor Latino’s second biggest event that began in 2016 and continues to be celebrated every year. Making this Sabor Latino’s third Annual Dominican Independencia event.

There’s no better feeling than seeing the Saint Rose community come together like one big family and have the same purpose. Which is to celebrate Dominican independence day that originally lands on Feb. 27. Sabor Latino’s way of showing their appreciation for the culture is by gathering around to dance, watch multiple performances along with decorations, a hot plate of Hispanic food and some Hispanic music to set the tone for the night.

“We just want to put a smile on people’s faces and just have a great time” said the host and Vice President of Sabor Latino, Dylan Figueroa.

Sabor Latino started off the night with an early Dominican dance, the baile de palo or, “long-drum dance,” which is an African-derived dance. Following other performances by Golden Vybz, His Image, Girls Next Door and a new, upcoming dance team Rose K-Pop.

“One thing that I appreciate that the E-broad has done over time is that they expanded the platform they provided. Sabor Latino has broken out of the mold of just Bachata and Merengue” said Michael Lopez one of the original founders. Sabor Latino has gone the extra lengths of exploring different hispanic dances and still continues to grow out their comfort zone.

“It feels good to be the beginning of something big on campus then coming back to see how far it has gone. A legacy that has kept on and continues to grow in the next couple of years. This event shows how a couple of people can come together and make something big happen” said by Elenie Martinez another original founder.

Sabor Latino’s goal is to provide a home for our generation and the next generation to come. Stay tuned for more of Sabor Latino in other performances and don’t miss out on their last big event for the semester in March,“Founders Day.”
