The College of Saint Rose takes safety seriously and the Saint Rose security team works diligently to ensure the safety of students. The Public Relations and Advertising Campaign class (COM 372) is working to make the security department even more effective.

The class, taught by Professor Sheridan, was assigned a client at the start of the semester. Jillian Rolland, a student in COM 372, said, “As a class, we agreed safety awareness needed to be increased and took measures to do so throughout the semester.” Rolland said that the class split into proposal groups and presented ideas to the Security Team and then have been working on implementing the ideas that Security deemed best.

The Safety Campaign that has come out of the work of the Com 372 class was designed around student knowledge of campus security. Michelle Schroll, a student in COM 372, said, “We wanted to do this campaign to make students more aware of security since many people are not aware of the opportunities that security offers. Prior to this campaign, students did not even know what a taxi voucher was.”

Students’ awareness is essential to their ability to utilize the services offered. One suggestion that was made to security was about a tips column and crime blotter to be published in The Saint Rose Chronicle. Steven Stella, director of safety and security, said, “The only problem that I see with a crime blotter is that there are frequently weeks without crimes to report! Otherwise, let’s go for the tips column and crime blotter as necessary.”

Britania Weinstein, a student in COM 372, said “The opportunity to work with security, has given us great experience for how to be successful public relations practitioners by allowing us to promote the importance of safety around campus as well as the value of Saint Rose Security to our campus community.” She said that this project was a beneficial not only to their class, but also beneficial to their peers and the campus as a whole.
