Women’s Soccer: The Last Dance- Sweet Sixteen

The Women’s Soccer team has made a great impact on Saint Rose history. This past season, the Golden Knights had gone undefeated 20-0-1 heading into the NCAA East Regional Final. The women’s team traveled to West Chester Pennsylvania to face off against Adelphi University. The two teams had an intense back and forth fight leading into two overtime sessions. Freshman Piper Klammer scored the one and only goal for the Knights with assists from Mia Klammer and Elina Seppala from a corner kick. The Adelphi Panthers had triumphed over the Golden Knights 4-2 in overtime penalty kicks.

With this being the last season for women’s soccer, they sure have made their mark on Saint Rose history. This is the first time in school history that a team has accomplished 20 games without a defeat. Not only is this a team achievement, but five players were named with All-Region honors. Graduate Elina Seppala, freshman Sydney Myers, junior Mia Klammer and senior Sanna Rein had all been named first team honors, along with sophomore goalkeeper Pia Bozic claimed second team honors. For the second year in a row, junior Mia Klammer has been named East Region Player of the Year. After surpassing the league with 18 goals and 16 assists this fall, Klammer, who currently leads the country with 52 points, was awarded the Northeast-10 Conference Player of the Year. She was named to the NE10 All-Tournament Team and won the Most Value Player award in the conference playoff tournament.

Mia Klammer wasn’t the only player that stood out this year. This season, Sanna Rein has led the Saint Rose defense to 14 shutouts, which ranks seventh among all DII teams. She has also contributed to the Golden Knights ranking 10th in the country with a meager goals-against average of 0.524.

As the women’s soccer team concludes their final season, senior Lauren Amerana spoke about the loss against Adelphi, the emotions and the team as a whole. “Where to even start, it honestly feels like a nightmare. I still don’t believe it at all. It was so hard to play knowing that not even ten hours before we had to play, we got told that the school was closing down for good; we just had so many emotions and so much to play for I think it pushed us away. We were all so excited before the game, we were ready because we wanted this not for us but for the school, the alumni, every single Saint Rose player and all the coaching staff who put hours in for us. I think it was just so much more than a game of soccer at that point. After the game we were in tears, we were so proud though we went unbeaten all season, but none of us could really believe that was it, the last players to ever wear a saint rose uniform.”

This past season is a season to be proud of regardless of how it ended. We are proud of all of our Golden Knights athletes, and we want to say congratulations to the women’s soccer team on their amazing accomplishments, achievements and records that have been broken this year.
