SEB Steps Up to the Plate

Now that spring has officially come it’s time for baseball, and the Student Events Board at Saint Rose is helping to get it started.
Some 50 students paid a mere $10 per ticket to watch the Yankees versus Red Sox game in game number two of a three-game set at Yankee Stadium. The students sat in the left field bleachers on a mid-60s spring day to watch one of the most entertaining rivalries in all of sports.
The package offered to students included bleacher seats, a Yankees hat, and transportation to and from the game in an Upstate Transit bus for the low price of just $10. As well as the Yankees cap, this day of the game was also a promotional day, giving fans attending the game a free Yankees calendar.
The Yankees went on to lose the game 8-4, thanks in large part to a stellar performance by Red Sox starter Joe Kelly. The Yankees fell down 8-1 early, and their rally fell just short, as Chris Young’s three-run home run in the bottom of the eighth was too little, too late.
The Yankees’ nightmarish start to the season continued, as they have not been able to score many runs per game in this young season. This game followed a 19-inning game the night before, a Red Sox 6-5 victory, leaving both bullpens depleted and tired. In the third and final game of the series, Clay Buchholz took on Masahiro Tanaka, with the final score being 14-4, Yankees.
This is the SEB’s first and only junket of the year, but they also hosted one in the spring of last year. The bus ride featured many movies for the students to enjoy during the long commute down to the Big Apple. The mood on the bus was very positive, before and after the game, even if it involved college students waking up before 8 a.m.
“This is the second baseball trip we’ve done,” said Maria Hartz, Trips Chair of the SEB. “Both trips were great. The only thing that made last year’s better for some of us was that the Yankees won.”
Students who attended both trips had a favorite.
“I went on both Yankee Stadium trips, and this one was by far the best, mostly because the Sox won this time,” said Jonas Miller, a sophomore at Saint Rose.
While the turnout for last year’s trip was respectable, this year’s was even better. The reservation process was simple for the students, as all they had to do was go to a website and fill out a form to reserve the tickets.
“I thought the online reservation process worked great,” said Hartz. “The trip sold out in only two minutes, which showed that everyone was on their A-game and found the reservation site easily.”
Hartz hopes that this will continue to be an interest for students for years to come.
“The student association did a great job planning the trip,” said freshman Keith Pero, a first-time attendee of the baseball trip.
“It was a great idea to have a trip to the game a little before finals. They planned everything out very well from the ride to the game, where they made it inexpensive for us college students to go to.”
