Saint Rose Takes Down Rival Assumption

The College of Saint Rose Women’s Soccer team took the field saturday against NE-10 rival Assumption and came out on the winning end, putting up three goals to Assumption’s one. Assumption took the lead in the 38th minute, the goal coming from senior Paige Radomski. The Greyhounds were only able to enjoy their lead for a short while. Saint Rose sophomore Elisa Galbiati headed in a set piece from senior midfielder Amanda Vasquez.
“First thing was to compete and work hard off the ball because Assumption is a quick and aggressive team, so we needed to match that,” senior midfielder Michaela Phillips said. Phillips was rewarded with an assist after she and sophomore Morgan Burchhardt set up Jennifer Busk for the second and deciding goal to give the Golden Knights the win.
Gianna Smith sent home the final goal of the game for Saint Rose in the 62nd minute of the game off an assist by freshman Danae Kaldaridou.
After a rough week two weeks ago, losing to Pace and tying with Mercy, the 10th-ranked Golden Knights wanted to get back to their winning ways. Beating Franklin Pierce 3-2 last Tuesday started the week right for the Knights, and yesterday taking down an in-conference rival is important to going to the NCAA Tournament.
“It was very important for our confidence to move forward and take it one game at a time,” Smith said.
Kaldaridou hasn’t just been making a difference on the field for Saint Rose. She just recently went to Switzerland to play in the UEFA European U-19 Championship for Greece. Kaldaridou didn’t just start, she played every single minute in all three matches for her country. She scored a goal in the match against Georgia, helping lead Greece to a 7-0 victory. She was named a team captain and led Greece to qualify for the elite round that will take place next April.
“It’s obviously a great honor and I always try to give everything I have and even more when wearing the Greek badge, because I know every other girl on the team is trying to do the same,” Kaldaridou said.
The Saint Rose Golden Knights will head on the road this week to play two NE-10 conference games. They will take on Adelphi on Wednesday, Oct. 14 in Garden City, then head to Massachusetts on Saturday, Oct. 17 to take on Bentley.
“It was a great win today. The team played well for the duration of the contest. We had some great goals and our midfield had a solid performance. Overall, great team effort with solid defending,” head coach Laurie Darling Gutheil said.
