The Saint Rose Golden Knight’s lacrosse team fell to the Assumption Greyhounds in overtime on Saturday by a score of 8-7 at the Plumeri Sports Complex.
The Golden Knights started their thirteenth game of the season with strong and intense plays from new and returning players.
Under clear skies, with an ending score of 7 – 7, Assumption took the win with one minute remaining in overtime. The teams were neck-and-neck through all four quarters, making the outcome extremely unpredictable.
“We had a lot of opportunities but we just couldn’t connect,” said freshman Matt Graham, an attack player for the Golden Knights.
The performances of senior attack Kevin Fleming, senior midfielder Kris Miller, and Graham did not go unnoticed. Together they scored a total of six points in Saturday’s game and assisted one another.
Defensively, senior goalkeeper Nick Longo ended with eleven saves.
Despite the loss, the Golden Knights displayed outstanding sportsmanlike conduct.
“The team worked really hard, and worked together really well,” said assistant coach Ryan Paparella.
The loss means that Saint Rose is eliminated from the lacrosse playoffs this year.
Despite their unexpected loss, the team kept their spirits high.
“This was a tough loss for us, but our team never stops fighting,” said Michael Tannenbaum, midfielder for the Golden Knights.
The Saint Rose Golden Knights await their final home game of the season against fellow Northeast-10 Conference member Merrimack College on Saturday, April 25. The game is scheduled to take place at Plumeri at 1:00 p.m.
As a result of their victory against American International on Saturday, Merrimack clinched the second place seed in the upcoming Northeast-10 Conference Championship, resulting in an overall record of 11-1. Currently, Saint Rose has a record of 4-9.
