The Saint Rose Golden Knight’s lacrosse team fell to the Mercyhurst Lakers on Saturday 7-3 at the Plumeri Sports Complex.
The Golden Knights came out with strong defense in their first game of the season, but failed to hold up in the second and third periods.
Under clear skies, the Mercyhurst Lakers took the win Saturday scoring three goals in the first period than continuing scoring onslaught in the second and third periods. Both teams were intense throughout their performance in all four periods, making the outcome unpredictable.
“Defense played great, but on offense we have a lot to work on,” said Jon Munroe, a midfielder for the Golden Knights. “Overall we played for each other and we played well.”
Goalie Liam Guiton defended the crease and paid close attention to the ball, resulting in a number of saves. The freshman, playing in his first game for the Golden Knights, made eight saves.
“I think we all played well as a team,” said Guiton. “I think we need to clean things up on both ends, but for the first game the team played well.”
The performances of junior midfielder Michael Tannenbaum and sophomore attacks Evan Doherty and Matt Graham did not go unnoticed. The trio accounted for the three goals in the game for the Golden Knights. Sophomore midfielder Connor Moore and freshman long stick midfielder Jordan Fredericks each picked up an assist in the opener.
“We want to improve every game and take today as a great opponent and use that as motivation,” said Jim Morrisey, head coach for the Golden Knights. “For our guys to go out there and battle as they did, says a lot about our guys and where we can go for the rest of the year.”
The Saint Rose Golden Knights await their second home game of the season against Mercy College on Friday, March 4 at 3:00 p.m. at the Plumeri Sports Complex in Albany, New York.
