The Saint Rose Women’s soccer team lost their first game of the season last Wednesday night in a Northeast-10 rival game versus Pace University by a score of 1-0.
The Setters (5-3-1) scored the game’s only goal at the 25:39 mark in the first half and was able to hold off the Golden Knights’ (7-1-1) strong offensive attack in the second.
Freshman midfielder Ariana Bresa scored from just inside the box as the ball curled past the outstretched arms of Saint Rose goalie Madison Taylor.
The rest of first half was controlled by Pace; Saint Rose was unable to get the ball through Pace’s tight-knit defense, which only allowed a total of three shots the rest of the half.
The Golden Knights then changed the tide in the second by sealing up their defense, prompting a steadier attack for them on offense lead by sophomore forward Morgan Burchhardt and freshman forward Aline Stockli.
Even with the tone of the game swaying toward Saint Rose, the strong goalie play of Pace sophomore Aisha Chauhan kept the Golden Knights off the board as they continued to challenge her for the entirety of the half.
The best chance to even the score for Saint Rose came at the 88-minute mark, when senior forward Jennifer Busk got her foot on a deflected ball and sent it on goal until it caught the top cross bar and rattled away.
Without looking back, Pace continued to dodge attempt after attempt till time ran out.
Saint Rose looks to get back on the winning side of things when they travel to Dobbs Ferry to face non-conference foe Mercy College on Saturday at 3 p.m. The Mavericks are 3-3-1 on the season.
When Saint Rose took the field again on Saturday against Mercy, the contest ended in a draw after another double overtime game for the Golden Knights. Sophomore Morgan Burchhardt assisted on both Saint Rose goals, the first of which was scored by Danae Kaldaridou. After Mercy tied it in the 68th minute, Roxana Hernandez gave the Knights a 2-1 lead.
The next game the Knights will play will bring them back home on October 6 to take on in-conference rival Franklin Pierce at 5:30 p.m.
