Last Wednesday there was no shortage of drama in the Nolan Gymnasium as both the men’s and women’s basketball teams picked up huge wins over Saint Michael’s with a game-winning last second shot and in overtime respectively, in the battle of the Knights.

Kareem Thomas rushing for the hoopThe heroics for the men’s team were supplied by Golden Knights guard Dan Mundweiler, who drilled a three-pointer with 4.1 seconds to go in the contest. The game was back and forth all night, with a tie at halftime, and numerous lead changes throughout. It was the Purple Knights who would fall 94-92.

The box score for the Golden Knights looked nearly immaculate. They hit a season-high 11 three-pointers on nearly 58 percent shooting while only turning the ball over seven times.

Mundweiler finished with nine points while forward Tyler Sayre eclipsed the 30-point mark for the fourth time this season while going 11 of 18 from the field and a perfect 11 for 11 from the charity stripe. Center Dominykas Milka netted 21 points and 13 rebounds, good for his 14th double-double of the year and 36th of his career as a Golden Knight. Kareem Thomas and Mical- Ryan Boyd rounded out the scoring with 13 points each.

Mike Holton Jr. and James Cambronne helped pace the Purple Knights to no avail, netting 22 and 21 points respectively.

Free throws proved to be the difference maker this time around with the Golden Knights making 13 of 16 while Saint Michael’s made the same amount, but on 22 attempts. I’m sure first year head coach Josh Meyer will make that a point at the next practice.

Earlier in the afternoon, the women’s side earned themselves a big overtime win.

After trailing by eight points at the half, the Golden Knights surged back with a big push from senior guard Desiree Simmons, Desiree Simmons keeping the drive alivewho scored 16 of her 22 points after the break. Simmons was also supported by Gabie Polce who added 19 points. Staci Barrett also added a double-double with 14 points and 15 boards while Jamie Hutchinson rounded out the group of double-digit scorers with 12.

The Golden Knights were able to finish the Purple Knights in overtime, outscoring them 16-11.

The win finally put the Golden Knights at the .500 mark overall for the season.

Looking ahead, both squads will head to Massachusetts on Wednesday to take on NE-10 rival Bentley. The women will tip-off at 5:30 followed by the men at 7:30.
