Not only did NBC’s new drama, “Manifest,” tie for TV’s highest rated drama series since “This Is Us” two years ago, but it also set the record for all-time biggest two-day lift for a series premiere in the network’s measurement history. Warning: this simplistic review will contain first episode spoilers.

When I first saw a commercial for “Manifest” months ago, I was intrigued by the incredible creativity that seemed to go behind the storyline. The series follows the story of Montego Air Flight 828, a flight that had landed safely after a bit of rough turbulence. With passengers relieved that they were able to land safe, they get off the plane hearing that within the timespan of their flight, their world has done a complete 360.

“The problem, ladies and gentlemen, is your plane departed Montego Bay, Jamaica on April 7, 2013. Today is November 4, 2018,” the FBI informs them. “You’ve all been missing, presumed dead for five and a half years.”

After mourning their loss, families and friends of passengers have moved on with their lives after losing hope. However, none of the passengers of the flight, including main characters Michaela (Melissa Roxburgh), Ben (Josh Dallas), Ben’s son Cal (Jack Messina), and medical researcher Saanvi (Parveen Kaur) have appeared to age or change in any way.

The group of passengers come together, however, toward the end of the episode after hearing voices in their heads that lead to the plane. As they watch the plane explode, they begin to realize that, because of their unique situation, they must begin to start their lives over and start their new chapter of reality together, considering no one else understands.

Personally, I was blown away by the first episode. I’ve read many reviews comparing the show to “Lost.” While I know the concept, I never had actually watched “Lost,” but I see where they are coming from. One reviewer dubbed the premiere to be “This Is Us” and “Lost” mixed together.

While the show may have some influences from other shows, I’m just so fascinated by this storyline. Also, the first episode tackles a lot of twists and turns throughout. I won’t spoil too much here, but I have to say, I was amazed. I stayed in my seat for the whole episode – even through the commercials. It takes quite an intense or intriguing storyline for me to just not even move during a show. I simply couldn’t wait to see what would happen next and I anticipate the next episode.

I highly recommend giving “Manifest” a watch. It can be seen Mondays 10/9c on NBC.
