Lights! Camera! Action! The new Film Club is here!

After the pandemic locked the world inside for over a year, I think it’s safe to say that the general population has embraced a newfound love for one artform in particular: films. While movie theaters were closed, people found comfort in curling up on the couch with a good movie streaming when there was nothing else to do.

Are you one of those people? If so, you would absolutely love to join the Saint Rose Film Appreciation club. This newly founded club here on campus aims to bring film-lovers and aspiring filmmakers alike together to appreciate all aspects of different genres of films.

Saint Rose students looking to enter a profession in film, whether it be directing, producing, screenwriting, acting, or anything else, would benefit from workshops the club plans to do, along with the analyzations of films and filmography. Building your skills and resume as a filmmaker is definitely something the Film Appreciation club wishes to provide for you.

Not interested in working in film, or your major has nothing to do with it? No problem! Even if you just simply enjoy discussing films, whether they may be action-packed blockbusters, period pieces, romantic comedies, or animated movies, all film enthusiasts are welcome here. The club has seen members from STEM majors, English, Music and even Criminal Justice.

Elizabeth Paul, student of Saint Rose and potential member, stated, “I wanted to join this club because I don’t know a lot about films, so I’m hoping to broaden my knowledge about everything film and what goes into different genres.”

The club’s founder and president, Naia Freeman, is a Criminal Justice and Law and Behavior major. Despite not going into the film profession herself, she has a passion for filmography and founded this club for other Saint Rose students who do as well.

However, just like every other club on campus recently, the Film club is running into some obstacles. There isn’t a large population of members to drive meetings, so the e-board finds themselves being the only members in attendance. They would greatly appreciate input from new members on what they would like to see the club accomplish this year and in the future.

The Film Appreciation club plans to hold events open to all of campus such as a movie-themed sip and paint, and soon in the spirit of Halloween, a movie screening of Halloween classics. Meetings are also open to new members anytime they would like to attend and participate. Some activities they have planned during meetings include screenwriting and production workshops, along with storyboarding, and analyzing different aspects of iconic films.

If you are interested in joining, meetings are held every Friday from 1-2:30 p.m. in Albertus Hall room 101. If you have any questions about the club, feel free to email President Naia Freeman at freemant692@strose.edu or follow the club’s Instagram page @strosefilmclub for updates on upcoming events, along with occasional story polls and questions.
