On November, the Saint Rose men’s and women’s cross country team compete at the NCAA East Regional at Franklin Park in Boston, M.A. The men’s team finished 16th out of 25 teams, and the women’s team finished 13th out of 27 teams that competed.

“We faced a lot of adversity this season,” said cross country head coach Andrew Rickert. “So we just wanted to see everyone go out and compete hard, striving for a personal best.”

For the men’s squad, senior Dan Gargaro led the way for the Golden Knights finishing 44th with a time of 33:37.8 in the 10k race. This was strong improvement for Gargaro after finishing 63rd in the NE-10 championship. Not to mention, Gargaro had also sprained his ankle that Thursday before the meet and still competed.

“Dan Gargaro really ran a heroic race,” said Rickert. “He thrives under the pressure and he’s got true guts.”

Next up to finish for the Golden Knights were three freshmen, Edmund Brown, Eamonn Coughlin, and Dominick Costanzo. They finished 51st, 103rd, and 107th with times of 33:56.4, 35:35.7, and 35:40.8.

“We also saw four freshmen guys take to their first 10k, which was a great experience for them,” said Rickert. “They’re the future of this team.”

For the women’s team, junior Liz Dalia led the way in the women’s race for the Golden Knights finishing 30th with a time of 23:59.9 in the 6k race. This was a big improvement for Dalia after finishing 48th at the NE-10 championship.

“I was happy for Liz because she didn’t even get a chance to run Regionals last season due to injury,” said Rickert.

Junior DanaWelch finished next in 45th place with a time of 24:21.8. Two freshmen, Bianca Jordan and Molly Wellman, finished next for the Golden Knights in 57th and 83rd with times of 24:40.1 and 25:21.6.

“I’m proud of my team,” said Dalia. “Retrospectively, I don’t think any of us can doubt that we are disappointed with how this season’s finish compared to last fall, but at the same time we were a different regional team this time around.”

The Golden Knights came into this season hoping to place amongst the top 2 teams and earn a trip back to nationals. That goal became very difficult to achieve as the season went on. The team faced much tougher competition in the NE-10 and many injuries set them back.

“There was no question that our team was stronger than ever and that we had more depth than a majority of the other teams, but all we could do was approach the East Regional meet with a positive outlook,” said Dalia.

Most of the cross country runners will continue to compete this season in indoor track and field. Many of them will be going into the indoor track and field season with a lot of confidence.

“We’ve had a number of great new additions to be on the lookout for in the sprints, jumps, and throws,” said Rickert. “We’re hoping to get as many provisional and NCAA automatic marks as possible for a chance at the NCAA championships in Minnesota this coming March.”

The indoor track and field team will open their season at Crowell on January 8th.
