The Haunting of Saint Rose

There has been much speculation in Albany for many years-decades, even-about whether or not the rumors are true-Is Saint Rose haunted? You can let us know what you think after reading these chilling stories about life in the Saint Rose dorms.

Emma Woods, a senior who lived in Brubacher her freshman year, told an eerie story about something that happened in the haunted dorm building: “One night, I was in my room in Brubacher with my friend Daria, and my roommate at the time. It was pretty late at night, and everyone in our hall was in their rooms for the night already. We were just talking and hanging out together, and out of nowhere, we heard the doorknob start to shake. When we looked over to see what was happening, the door had opened a crack, and then it closed again. The whole time the doorknob was down, as if someone was opening it. It had happened really quick, so we thought someone was messing around, but we didn’t hear anyone outside, and then when we looked out in the hall, no one was there. We pretty much always kept the door locked from then on at all times, but the knob would still shake every once and a while like someone was trying to open it,” Emma said. Scary, right? What’s even scarier is this type of thing is pretty frequent in the dorms here.

Rose Lebron, another senior who lived in Brubacher Hall her freshman year, my roommate that year, stated, “One night, my roommate Maia and I stayed up late watching a movie. It was about 3 a.m. when the movie finished and we decided to go to bed. The lights were off, the door was locked, and we both began falling asleep until we realized there was a creepy sound in our room. We asked each other if we both heard it and talked about what it could possibly be. It was kind of like a creaking sound, but neither of us knew where it was coming from. For about ten minutes, we both just sat in silence trying to determine the origin of the sound as our eyes adjusted to the complete darkness. All of the sudden, we both focused our eyes on my closet door as we realized the sound we had been hearing was my closet door opening itself slowly. We started screaming because it was really scary. It was 3 a.m. and my closet door, which had been fully shut all night, just started opening on its own out of nowhere? I had a bedside lamp and turned the light on, jumped out of bed, and slammed the door shut before it could open any more. It had been opened about 4-5 inches. It was completely terrifying, and we never forgot it.” Living in Brubacher honestly gave us a lifetime of spooky stories.

Some frequent scary things that also happened to Rose and I in Brubacher were that we would frequently hear what sounded like a toddler running barefoot in our 3rd floor hallway, then it would stop, and then nothing would be there when we looked out the door. Other times, we would both be sitting at our own desks working on homework, and our string lights would randomly turn themselves on. One night, I even heard an acoustic guitar playing, but then I realized that none of the girls in our hallway played guitar, and that the sound was coming from my own closet, where my guitar was laying against the wall. Our own Ameara Ditsche even said one night, her coffee maker began brewing a cup of coffee on its own in the middle of the night!

Emily Paolicelli, a graduate student here, stated that when she frequented the school theater, she would constantly hear loud footsteps and even a toilet flush itself when she was all alone. Hugo Triminio, a junior, stated that while walking in Centennial one night, he heard whispering behind him, but when he turned around, there was no one there. Then, when he started walking faster, he heard footsteps behind him! Things like this seem to happen very frequently in the dorms. Emily Cruz, an alumni from 2021, stated that she heard the “Ghost Boy” of Charter Hall playing his trumpet when she used to live there! There are many ghosts rumored to be living on campus, including some in Charter Hall, Brubacher Hall, Carey Hall, Morris Hall, and Quillinan Hall. Look out, Saint Rose.
