At the Capital Region Out of the Darkness Walk to Fight Suicide, community members gathered to honor people who have been impacted by suicide and raise awareness about mental health. A team walked in the name of Taylor Paige Farnsworth, a Saint Rose ‘18 alumna and former opinions editor of “The Chronicle.” Taylor was lost to suicide on Jan. 25, 2019. Her surviving family members want to give positive energy to the world in Taylor’s memory.

“We want to bring awareness to those who struggle,” said Julie Farnsworth. “It’s helping people come out of the darkness and into the light.”

Matthew Farnsworth added, “Treat people with kindness, respect, and love, because you never know what they’re going through.”

Taylor’s Titans raised $1,180 for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention as of the walk date. People can still donate to the team in Taylor’s memory until Dec. 31, 2019. Search for the Capital Region Walk for R.I.T.A. on www.afsp.donordrive.com under the “AFSP Walks” tab, the search for Taylor’s Titans. In total, there were over 1,500 participants at the Capital Region walk, and they have collectively raised $183,691 so far.

Julie summed up the meaning behind all of the fundraising and walking in two words:

“There’s hope,” she said.
