Haunted Hearst: A new treat for students

The COM Ambassadors bring students of The College of Saint Rose Communications Department and other programs activities each semester. On Oct. 24, The William Randolph Hearst Center for Communications and Interactive Media was home to spooky surprises and more.

“It flowed a lot smoother than I thought it was gonna flow,” said Jaysalee Salcedo, a junior in the communications program. “We had a good turn out.”

Though Salcedo had her concerns, the clubs came together for a night of activities, treats, games, and even a dance party. Her communication with clubs throughout the process, organization with the other COM Ambassadors, and then the execution of the event with the collaborative efforts from students were all contributors to the success of the event.

“I wanted to do things for the department and I wanted to assist in some of the major events that go on,” said Joyce Hills, a COM Ambassador and the president of SRTV.

Hills is a senior in the communications program and a co-organizer of Haunted Hearst. SRTV did a haunted photo booth complete with Fear, the College’s mascot. Haunted Hearst attendees also got to choose their background for their picture.

The COM Ambassadors discussed events that could be held, and eventually chose to organize Haunted Hearst. The operation was collaborative between SRTV and the COM Ambassadors, and M.A.P.S, Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA), The Silhouettes, Late Knight, Identity, The Chronicle, Saint Rose Television, and Sabor Latino were all clubs who either tabled or hosted activities at the event.

“It was honestly a little stressful at first, I never actually worked like a really big event like this,” said Kyle Humphreys, a COM Ambassador and senior communications major with a concentration in critical media studies, who was also a co-organizer. “We’ve actually had like a pretty decent turn out, and you know, I would definitely like to do more stuff like this in the future.”

Haunted Hearst was also an opportunity for clubs to promote and highlight the activities their club provides. The PRSSA chapter of Saint Rose is a year old, and they have been striving to create an audience.

“We really love the COM department and we are trying to make a bigger presence here on campus,” said Melissa Cruz, the vice president of PRSSA chapter at Saint Rose. “So this is a time for us to really let people know about…our services.”
