Dancing in the Dark

Some people like to dance, and some like to work out to lose weight. On Jan. 29, Sabor Latino managed to combine both during their first ever Glow in the Dark Zumba.

Located within MidKnight Eats, the exercise dance party had a significant turnout. President of the club, Liana Morales helped start off the event by leading the students into various dance moves. The club bought glow in the dark sticks and everyone who came received one.

The lights were off and everyone came to do their exercise.

According to student, Carolyn Ortiz “This was a nice way to exercise, the lights are off and you don’t have to stare at people. It’s also a good way to have fun and it’s not limited to anyone.”

It’s easy to feel intimidated and uncomfortable when you’re out of your comfort zone, but the students who came to the event we’re willing to try something new. The Sabor Latino group were also encouraging and helped liven up the mood by using various genres to get people excited. There was Latino music, 70s, Korean (K) Pop, and Rap mix.

The event lasted from 8 to 9 p.m. Michael Sanchez, who is a part of Sabor Latino says “The event went very well, good turnout for the team. Good to see other people enjoy dancing with the team. Dancing is a great way to have fun and exercise and do something new.”

Due to the weather conditions and drop in temperature, a lot of students probably could not make it to the event, but if Sabor Latino does make Glow in the Dark Zumba a weekly occasion then they will possibly gather a lot of attention. Midnight Eats might not be a large venue space to hold the next Zumba event.

Some suggestions could be the Sanctuary or the gym. It’s hard for people, especially students to motivate themselves to go to the gym and then work out for a half hour to an hour. With the Glow in the Dark Zumba, they could invite their friends, listen to music that everyone can dance to and have a great time while burning off the calories.

One of the Zumba’s dance coordinators, Elizabeth Diaz says “I think the event was very successful for our first time hosting the Glow in the Dark Zumba. A lot of people came out to dance and everyone had a lot of fun dancing the night away. It was nice to see a bunch of people from campus who all have different majors come out to dance freely without being judged. So, it was a nice get together and probably in the future, we could host the event a couple more times throughout the semester.”

The Glow in the Dark event could hold a lot of potential, from being able to use the event to hold a fundraiser or making the event available for adults within the region who might be interested in Zumba.

“I can honestly say it was one of my favorite events on campus,” said President Morales “It was a first-time event for Sabor Latino, but definitely not the last Zumba event. It was a huge success and I am super happy with the outcome!”
