Black Student Union Talent Show: A Student’s Perspective

“All the Lights,” the first talent show hosted by the Black Student Union at the college was staged Friday, Oct. 6.

The performances showcased multiple Saint Rose clubs, including dances from the ALANA Steppers, Sabor Latino, and the Golden Vybz. The event was located at Midknight Eats. As 8:00 p.m. rolled around, the house was packed with audience members standing up in the back. The show was opened by the BSU e-board introducing themselves and thanking the audience for the wonderful turn out.

The first act was by the His Image gospel choir singing “Freedom” by Eddie James. The harmonious tunes gave everyone a taste of the talent in store. Next up was Michael Sanchez on his own singing a smooth cover on guitar. The ALANA steppers followed and brought up the energy with their performance and made their presence known. There was a surprise 2-in-1 performance by Maria Carvajal singing “Volvi Nacer” by Carlos Vives shortly followed by herself and Sabor Latino with a spicy dance routine. The Golden Vybz kept up that energy as they performed something a bit more upbeat, which caught the audience’s attention and got them moving.

The show gave performers a platform to show off their talent and present some of their own music. Connor Walsh shared two of his original songs, and he mentioned the music competition he’s in, sharing his graciousness for being a part of the program and being able to get his name out there even further. Performers Jay Mehki and Jus Otto also performed their own songs, letting the audience know where to find them on social media if they’re interested. David Cuttino and the Trouveres sang a cover of “Roses” by Outkast, and the band even gave a snippet of what they’ll perform for open mic night. The show was closed by Isaiah Vallejos, who is on the BSU eboard, with an original performance.

The show was an opportunity to present all of the talent Saint Rose has to offer. The energy was up, the excitement was real, and the audience loved the unique performances. In between performances, there were some “you had to be there” moments, like a surprise dance battle, a cheer-off and a joke session. Even the BSU eboard got down, showing off some of their own moves. The event brought a crowd and really encouraged people to express themselves, whether it be through music, dance or spoken word. Students hope to see more events like this that encourage fun times and self-expression in the future.
