Jennifer Hankin: A Role Model for All

“Every day is always a little different—different students and different issues. But at the end of the day, I just want to help.”
The above comes from Jennifer Hankin. Anyone who has ever visited the academic advising office in St. Joe’s has most likely seen her. As assistant director of academic advising, Hankin helps students create class schedules and understand degree requirements; she also works with students who are considering a change in major or who are struggling academically.
Hankin, originally from York, Maine, studied marketing at Quinnipiac University. With an original interest in public relations, Hankin thought that her chosen career prospect in marketing would cater to her interest in wanting to work and interact with people. It soon became apparent, however, that marketing was just not for her.
“After some coursework, I lost interest, but decided to stay with the major,” said Hankin.
Upon graduating from Quinnipiac, Hankin quickly took a position at the University of Maryland Baltimore County as an admissions counselor. She soon went on to the University of Baltimore, where she undertook a similar role. Yet Hankin knew that she wanted something more.
“I knew I wanted a graduate degree, but I still wasn’t sure what I wanted to do when I grew up. I decided an MBA was a good option because of my business background and because of its versatility,” she said.
Hankin was able to earn her master’s in business administration at the University of Baltimore—a decision that helped guide her to where she is today.
“With that degree, I was able to make the move from admissions to advising, since most advisor positions require an advanced degree,” Hankin said. “It was one of the best decisions I have ever made.”
The outcome eventually helped lead Hankin to Saint Rose—a place where her passion for working with people, particularly students, really shines through. Her love of the Saint Rose atmosphere and community makes her job particularly rewarding, especially when she can help those who are going through tough times.
“There are some days that I feel more like a counselor than an advisor, and that is perfectly fine with me. I understand that some students may be having difficulty with a class or with the transition to college, and I’m here to help in any way I can,” Hankin said.
Kelly Meyer, director of academic advising, noted that he is extremely fortunate to work in the same office as Hankin. “She’s caring and kind. When someone’s going through a rough time, Jen goes out of her way to help them,” said Meyer. “She is honestly invested in students, her co-workers and the institution, and it shows in everything she does.”
This passion of Hankin’s has not gone unnoticed. In 2012, Hankin received The College of Saint Rose Service Excellence Award, an award given in recognition of “a demonstrated commitment to the qualities and values of the founders of The College of Saint Rose.”
Jennifer Richardson, director of residence life, said that Hankin is highly deserving of this award.
“Her devotion and dedication both to the college and its students is clear in everything she does,” Richardson said of Hankin. “I am grateful and honored to be able to call her a colleague and friend.”
When asked about any advice she would give to Saint Rose students, Hankin recalled a question her son’s kindergarten teacher used to ask when a student would go to her with a problem: “Is it a big deal or a little deal?” Hankin said that all students and people should ask themselves this when dealing with life struggles.
“We are all going to face obstacles along the way, but it’s how you deal with them that matters,” continued Hankin.
Such advice is exactly what Teresa Goodman, administrative secretary for the academic advising office, praises Hankin for.
“She offers rational advice to both co-workers and students and truly looks to their best interests. I am honestly not sure what our office would do without her brain,” said Goodman.
Hankin’s passion for interacting with others extends beyond the Saint Rose community. She has a strong love for her family, and enjoys spending time with her two kids, Will and Natalie. Her kids are constant reminders of all that she has accomplished in life.
Looking back on all she has done, Hankin has learned that everyone is in charge of creating their own opportunities.
“If you work hard, good things will come your way,” she revealed.
