The fall semester is rapidly approaching, signaling a new beginning for students and teachers alike. While many students wait for the new academic year with great anticipation, perhaps no group on campus is as anxious to get the semester underway as the Golden Knight athletes. A myriad of different sports will kick off their seasons in the fall, with 9 teams donning the gold and black as classes resume.

The men's and women's soccer teams have an especially early start in August, giving the players ample time to form the chemistry necessary to succeed in the Northeastern 10 Conference. Coach Laurie Darling Gutheil will enter her 12th season as coach of the women's soccer team as the all time winningest coach in Saint Rose history. Her teams have made the NCAA tournament 4 of the last 5 years, and are the reigning NE-10 Conference champions. The squad will return their ESPN Magazine All-District Academic All-American, forward Sami Brown. Meanwhile, the men's team will return 16 players from a club that suffered through a difficult season in 2007. The team limped to a 1-15-1 record, but hopes to rebound under new coach Chris Gilmore, who spent 12 years coaching at Green Mountain College in Vermont. Gilmore led his squads to 3 undefeated regular seasons, and helped to institute 6 new athletic programs at his school while doubling as Director of Athletics.

The women's volleyball team also kicks off their season in August. In 2007, the club fought their way to a 14-13 mark, posting an impressive 8-5 record on their home court at Daniel P. Nolan Gymnasium. The team will need to improve their game on the road if they wish to return to the 20 win mark, which Coach Brian Goodale led the squad to the previous 4 consecutive seasons.

The Golden Knights cross country teams have high hopes for this year, and will be putting them on display in their biggest home meet to date.

"The big news is that our home meet, 'The Joust', will have the most teams we've ever hosted," said men's and women's head coach Andrew Rickert. "Siena, RPI, Bentley, St. Michael's, Williams, Mercy, Molloy, and Nyack are all slated to attend."
