The College of Saint Rose earned a split with Northeast-10 Conference rival Assumption in what marked the 2008 league openers for both clubs.?
The Golden Knights (4-8/1-1 NE-10) rallied from a 2-0 deficit to take the first game 3-2, but then let an outstanding pitching performance by junior right-hander Tracy Chesebrough go for naught in a 1-0 setback in the finale.?
After Assumption (5-7/1-1 NE-10) took advantage of two Saint Rose errors in the sixth inning of the opener by scoring a pair of runs, the Golden Knights rallied with three of their own in the home half of the frame.?
Sophomore catcher Amanda Morano belted a leadoff double to right and junior first baseman Katie Wiemann slapped a base hit to left to put runners at the corners.??Wiemann then stole second to set the stage for senior shortstop Jessica Pastore who brought across both runners with a base hit to left. Two batters later, Pastore came around with what held up as the winning run via an Assumption error.
?Morano and Pastore wound up with two hits apiece to pace the Saint Rose attack, while senior right-hander Kristen Calahan did allow an earned run throughout 6.0 innings of work to run her record to 2-4 on the year. Chesebrough, a transfer from nearby Hudson Valley CC, retired Assumption in order in the seventh to collect her first save in a Golden Knights uniform.?
Senior pinch hitter Korina Salafia had an RBI single for the Greyhounds in the sixth.?
In the nightcap, Chesebrough was dominant before allowing a leadoff solo shot to left by freshman shortstop Marissa Palumbo for what proved to be the difference. Chesebrough fanned 13, without issuing a walk, and scattered three hits in a hard-luck loss. Junior left fielder Kerry Monahan went 2-for-3 to highlight the Saint Rose attack.?
Meanwhile, Assumption junior right-hander Heather Brothers tossed 6.2 innings of shutout ball to improve to 4-1 this season. Brothers fanned five and allowed six hits.?
Saint Rose is scheduled to return today against American International at 5pm.
