The Golden Knights survived a late push by Southern New Hampshire on Monday, extending their winning streak to five games with an 8-7 victory. The win completed a sweep of the teams' season series for Saint Rose, and was the third victory over the Penmen in three days. The team is currently in first place in the Northeastern 10 conference, with a perfect 4-0 record in the league.
"We beat them twice and we had to take care of business today at home," said Saint Rose coach Casey O'Connor. "We take pride in winning games at home."
The Golden Knights never trailed in the contest, taking an 8-1 lead with a 4 run 5th inning. They looked to have the game in hand until the 7th inning, when Saint Rose starting pitcher Jeremiah St. Louis started to lose control. After loading the bases, St. Louis gave up a two run double to Southern New Hampshire infielder Bill Murray. St. Louis threw a wild pitch to the next batter, which allowed another run to score, and was taken out of the game after walking the batter. He was replaced by sophomore hurler Nate Ward, who retired the next two batters to end the inning.
In the top of the ninth inning, junior reliever Dan O'Leary took the mound, but immediately ran into trouble. O'Leary let in two runs, with a third scoring on an error by shortstop Casey Deuel. The Knights were able to stop the bleeding, however, and escape with a one run victory.
St. Louis had a strong outing, striking out 8 batters over 6.1 innings. He allowed 4 runs, but only two were earned. The win brings his record to 2-3 on the season. St. Louis cited the benefits of last Saturday's double header with the Penmen in the squad's preparation for Monday's contest.
"I had a good chance to watch the guys and how they were swinging," he said. "The team really saw a lot of pitches. We were pretty prepared."
Coach O'Connor was pleased with his starter's performance.
"Jeremiah was good," he said. "He (was) off four days rest. He gave us a good outing on Tuesday, and came back and played well."
