Team Duece defeated Revenge of the Banana Phones to take their first title in two years.
"It feels excellent," captain Jared Dixon said. "And a long time coming."
Revenge was the focus here as Team Duece defeated the same team that destroyed them in the first round of last year's tournament under the name The Banana Phones.
Unusual to some, the returning champions, The Weapons of Mass Destruction featuring Burt Reynolds were not on the court as the championship balls were tossed. The WMD's fell to Revenge of the Banana Phones in the first ever overtime contest on the tournaments now four year resume.
"It had to happen at some point," WMD captain Joe Pryba said. "I'm glad to see a new champion crowned. It breaths new life into this great event."
The WMD's would not go down without fight, forcing overtime with a mere five seconds left in the contest. Down five to four in numbers, a last ditch effort by Aimee Gould, launching a ball towards the crowded back line of banana slingers resulted in the out that would tie the two teams up in numbers as the time expired.
According to Dodgeball Madness rules should two teams have the same number of players when the time runs out, a single out playoff would follow. The first team to eliminate a player of the other team would win and advance to the championships.
A few minutes into the extra period of play, amidst a flurry of crowd chants and flying bodies, WMD's sniper Shawn Gilligan was hit on his way to the ground, completing the victory for Revenge of the Banana Phones; leaving the three time champions to watch as a new champion was crowned.
Pryba and fellow teammates showed class and congratulated the new champions after the game.
"If we are still around next year we will be back to claim what is ours," Pryba said.
In the championship game Team Duece quickly took the advantage in numbers and never looked back with at least a 6-3 advantage in personnel for the remainder of the game. With trophies in hand, the new Dodgeball Madness champions plan to celebrate.
"I'm going to put it next to my intramural sportsmanship award I got in the seventh grade," Dixon said. "We owe this victory to the spark like inspiration of our team."
"Mine is going next to my Dundee," said teammate Julie Steel. "It's pretty serious."
Whatever they decide to do with their trophies, for one night, they were able to defy all odds and become victorious; one night; a new champion. A team of common men will now be remembered in Dodgeball Madness history; legends.
