The College of Saint Rose awarded approximately 90 students for their best academic performances at 2008 Honors' Convocation, held at Saint Joseph Hall Auditorium Sunday.

Awards were given to talented students of various majors on the bases of appropriateness of form and mastery of the conventions of the genre, maturity of diction, syntax, tone, and style of their written academic papers in a luminous ceremony of Saint Rose's faculty, alumni, students, and parents.

Dr. Mark Sullivan, President of Saint Rose congratulated the award winning students on their best effort and encouraged them to serve the community and lead it toward a better future.

"We value and honoring you for your hard work. Hope the good work continues," he said in his speech.

Awards included Academic Achievement Awards, Sister Rose of Lima Awards, School Awards, Outstanding Senior Awards, Adult and Continuing Education Award, Student Affairs Award, and Special Awards. Special Awards included The Annual Sister Patricia Kane Award which was given for the first time. Daniel Grskovic won it for his article "A Hustler's Ambition."

Annual Sister Patricia Kane Writing Award in Journalism is named in honor of Sr. Patricia Kane, the founder of Communication program at Saint Rose. According to Saint Rose's department of Communication's website, Kane was basically hired by the English department to teach speech. She then started teaching courses in Mass Media Communication.

"I proposed a communication program for undergraduates. It was accepted, and the communication department started its classes with 15 students," Kane said.

The department of communication established in 1981, and according to Alfred Antico, department chair, today, the program is one of the largest at the college, with nearly 170 undergraduates and 30 graduate students.

"I am extremely proud of the faculty and staff who have served the college tirelessly and have improved it excellently," Kane said.

Grskovic was immensely excited about achieving the award.

"It is a great pleasure achieving the first Sister Patricia Kane Award. I am really honored," Grskovic said.

Speaking to The Chronicle, Grskovic credited his continuous hardwork and teachers' academic assistance for his success.

"I feel lucky for studying here [Saint Rose] at a consistently supportive academic environment."
