Annual Sister Patricia Kane Writing Award in Journalism is named in honor of Sr. Patricia Kane, the founder of Communication program at Saint Rose. According to Saint Rose's department of Communication's website, Kane was basically hired by the English department to teach speech. She then started teaching courses in Mass Media Communication.
"I proposed a communication program for undergraduates. It was accepted, and the communication department started its classes with 15 students," Kane said.
The department of communication established in 1981, and according to Alfred Antico, department chair, today, the program is one of the largest at the college, with nearly 170 undergraduates and 30 graduate students.
"I am extremely proud of the faculty and staff who have served the college tirelessly and have improved it excellently," Kane said.
Grskovic was immensely excited about achieving the award.
"It is a great pleasure achieving the first Sister Patricia Kane Award. I am really honored," Grskovic said.
