The Basic Concept:
The cardinal directions of Feng Shui, which determine the placement of objects in the living space, were establish by the marker-stars of the mega-constellations known as the 'Four Celestial Animals' in Chinese culture. The living space should be arranged according to the basis of these colors, animals, and seasons:

East: the Bluegreen Dragon (Spring equinox)
South: the Red Bird (Summer solstice)
West: the White Tiger (Autumn equinox)
North: the Dark (Mysterious) Turtle (Winter solstice)

These cultural deities are expressed in a chart (see image) that's the basic guide to laying out a space, called the 'bagua.' It's traditionally represented in the shape of an octagon. Each facet of the octagon is assigned at least one of life's aspects, such as career concerns, a natural element, and at least one color. Furniture and possessions should be arranged according to the proper colors and meanings of the objects in one's life. The closer the objects fit into this design, the more harmonious your life will be. Arranging your space should lead to a happier, healthier life.
