Best sellers waiting in the library

Students at the College of Saint Rose might think that the only books waiting in the Neil Hellman library are the classics and some obscure texts.. Perhaps they also think of the stereotypical image of dusty books with yellowed pages. However the Hellman makes things happen, and newer and considerably cleaner books are available and ready to be read..
The Neil Hellman library has a Best Sellers collection in the lounge on the 2nd floor of the building, with some sample books being presented on the main floor. Many of these books are contemporary best-sellers, both fiction and non-fiction. Here are some choice books that might interest any readers at the college who want to take a break from a text book or Moby-Dick.
Author Michael Cunningham might sound familiar to some people since two of his novels have been made into novels. At Home at the End of the World features Colin Farrell and The Hours features an all-star cast of Meryl Streep, Julianne Moore, Nicole Kidman in the lead roles.
The Hours orbited around Virginia Woolf and her novel Mrs. Dalloway, following the life of three characters with interlocking stories including Virginia Woolf herself. In Specimen Days, the common thread is the famous poet Walt Whitman, his work and New York City.
The three stories in this novel are: "In the Machine," a ghost story set in the Industrial Revolution. Followed by "The Children 's Crusade," a modern noir-esque thriller with a police officer tracking down a band of terrorist bombing the city. Ending with "Like Beauty," a future sci-fi story where a runaway cyborg befriends an alien baby sitter.
These may seem high concept ideas, but Cunningham makes them human and relatable, whether they're human or not. This is also a great introduction to Whitman without having to read the entirety of the poem, "Song of Myself."
Born Standing Up introduces readers to a Steve Martin before Cheaper by the Dozen and Father of the Bride.
