Season's greetings: Holiday gifts for the whole family

Issue date: 12/5/07 Section: Entertainment
There are times to save money and then there are times to spend. It's easy to make fun Halloween costumes and cut corners on travel expenses, but when it comes to holiday gifts for the family, this is one of those occasions to do the gifts up right. With less than three weeks until Christmas and Hanukah under way, it's time to get the presents under control. Some of these suggestions may sound stereotypical, but they're classic standards that will work for most any member of the family. If nothing else works, remember a standard gift certificate may not scream originality, but the person will give thanks for knowing they can choose whatever her or she wants. At the end of the day, you know your family the best and know what gifts will make them happiest, but here are some general ideas in case you're at a loss.

Mom
Spa Package
Mom works hard all year and it can take a toll come year's end. To help rejuvenate her and give her some relaxing time to herself, a day at a spa is just the trick. There are packages that vary widely in price and offerings depending on the specific locale but there are also some classic services that any mother would enjoy: massages, facials, manicures and more. No day at the spa would be complete without a lunch, too.

Accessories: Jewelry, purses
Bling mom out this year by getting her the perfect necklace or handbag. Jewelry is one of the best gifts for moms because they really can never have too many pieces, whether it's necklaces, bracelets, rings, earrings, watches or more. Purses are a great accessory for the mom always on the go. Large or small, they can be crammed full of all her needs. Think about the mom in question before buying a large tote bag or a small clutch.

On Broadway
New York City is only a few hours away and a creative option is to treat mom to a day of theatre in Manhattan. This season is full of classics and new hits; depending on what she likes best, there are musicals or straight plays for every personality. Two plays can be seen in a day if matinees are available. Suggestions: "Legally Blonde the Musical," "Hairspray," "Pygmalion," "The Joy Luck Club." Stay away from: "Die Mommie Die!"
