The Saint Rose women's soccer team advanced to the round of 16 with a victory over the Merrimack Warriors Sunday.

Within four minutes The Lady Knights netted two en route to a 3-1 victory. With the win, the team improved to 19-0-2 on the year, and remain the top seed in the New England Region.

The Lady Knights advance to the round of 16 for the third time in school history and will battle sixteenth ranked Franklin Pierce Friday, Nov. 16. The Ravens defeated eighth seeded Bryant by a 3-0 decision that same afternoon.

The Lady Knights defeated Bryant 2-1 the week before to win the Northeast-10 Conference Championship.

In the first half both teams mounted offensive attacks. Despite the Warriors having an advantage in corners of 9-2, the Lady Knights edged them out in shots and were able to net three.

Just over 10 minutes into the game junior forward Sami Brown opened the scoring. Brown found the ball off a deflected shot and drilled a shot far post to give Saint Rose the lead.

The Warriors fought right back and scored the equalizer 13 minutes later. Senior fullback Hillary McGarr beat an outstretched Lauren Steinberg. Steinberg had another strong performance, finishing with five saves.

In the 82nd minute, senior midfielder Ashley McGuire broke the 1-1 tie by redirecting a well-fed pass from sophomore midfielder Courtenay Gannon from about 10 yards out.

With about eight minutes to go, the Lady Knights had taken the lead and continued with the offensive push. Strong defensive play also helped to keep possession out of the team's zone.

A few minutes later Brown gave some insurance with a lofted shot from right to left over Warrior keeper Shannon Rowan's head. It was Brown's second of the game and her 15th of the season.

The Lady Knights are two wins away from the final four in Alabama.
