Junior forward Kailey Egbert one-timed a cross into the net with just under 12 minutes remaining in regulation to lift The College of Saint Rose over visiting Bentley, 1-0, in a Northeast-10 Conference quarterfinal match last Sunday afternoon at Albany Academy.?
The Golden Knights (16-0-2), who are the top-seed in the tournament, advanced to the semifinal round for the sixth straight season with the victory. Furthermore, they established a school record for single-season shutouts by chalking their 14th of the season.
?Both squads had chances to get on the board very early in the contest. The Falcons (8-9-3) nearly struck in the sixth minute when freshman forward Shaina Lefkowitz lifted a shot from 15-yards out that deflected off the crossbar and was cleared away by the Saint Rose defense.??In the 24th minute of play, freshman midfielder Amanda Schweers had her header from five-yards out stuffed by Bentley freshman keeper Kara Smith to keep the game scoreless. Smith registered five saves in the opening period, while senior keeper Lauren Steinberg turned aside two shots for the Golden Knights.
?The second stanza was somewhat of a different story as Saint Rose applied pressure throughout to account for a 10-0 advantage in shots and a 4-0 edge in corner kicks. For the match, the Golden Knights held a 19-3 margin in shots and earned nine corners.
At the 78:12 mark, Saint Rose senior midfielder Ashley McGuire found her self open in space on the right side. She beat a defender and put a cross in front of the goal mouth that Egbert knocked in while hitting the turf for her sixth tally of the season and her third-game winner. Additionally, McGuire added to her single-season assist record with her 13th of the year.??Smith finished with eight saves and was spectacular throughout the match for the Falcons, while Steinberg stopped two shots to pick up the 25th shutout of her career.?
The Golden Knights will host the winner of fifth-seed Stonehill and fourth-seed Merrimack on Thursday. A game time will be set tomorrow morning by both team's coaches. Regardless, Saint Rose will host as the tournament's top-seed.
