Words Have Power

Many believe that writing is annoying. These are the people that hate school and have Friday nights that are straight out of the Jersey Shore.

Writing can be a wonderful thing. It can be therapeutic. It can   bring people out of the worst situation. Writing anything; a letter, a journal, a story, a quote, anything. Writing anything is necessary.

If you are feeling down, write a story about it; write a journal about it; write a letter to someone. Words are extremely powerful. They can save a one’s life. They can put the harmful behind bars. They can rescue those in need.

On October 20, we, as a school, are celebrating the National Day on Writing. There will be a commuter lounge full of activities and posters. There will be people to talk to and puzzles to complete. There will be different ways to express yourself. Take these ways and feel better about yourself.

For me, writing is a way to get open up and free my mind. During class, on a long car ride, during dinner, story ideas invade my mind and continue to flood it. I am always writing story ideas down on paper. It is rare for me to find time to actually spread these ideas out and turn them into masterpieces, but it does happen. Okay, masterpieces may be an exaggeration, but I am proud of the stories I complete and when I finish a story, there is no greater feeling that I know of.

The National Day on Writing is a great way to unwind and get out your feelings and ideas. Everyone is stressed and tense, so why not express your thoughts in a constructive and creative way. You do not have to follow a format or stay to a strict and formal way of expression. Write down a word that may express how you are feeling. Write down something that happened that day that you want to remember forever.

I urge those readers who may not believe in the power of words,  or those who may not realize their power, to try, just try, to write something every day. It does not have to be something that has meaning. It does not have to be a poem. It does not have to be a story. It could be a word creatively drawn on a piece of scrap paper. It could be a small reminder to post on your mirror that says, “Today will be a good day.” (This is fashioned on my own mirror and I look at it every single day. It makes me feel better on the worst of days.) It could be a letter to someone you may never deliver.

Many write poems to express themselves. I am no good at poetry. I highly dislike writing, and reading, most poetry. I do not understand it. As much as I love the subject of English, I will never understand poetry. However, I write out quotes, I write journals, and I write fiction. This is my way to settle down. Some go to the gym. Some play video games, Some watch movies. However, I urge you to try something new. I am begging you, JUST TRY IT! It can only be a good thing.
