Women’s Soccer Dominates Nyack

The Golden Knights shut out the women’s Nyack Warriors soccer team leaving the score 4-0. The Saint Rose defense was able to hold Nyack scoreless with endless pressure and physicality.

At the 15:40 mark in the first half sophomore forward Karmyn Carter scored the first goal of the game assisted by Victoria Barris.

Immediately after the first goal from Carter, Saint Rose scored again, this time off the foot of forward senior Roxana Hernandez.

“I saw one of my players, J.J, she was going to take a shot and I knew it was going to deflect somehow, so I was there just in case the ball came out,” said Hernandez.

About eight minutes later, junior forward Sophia Constantine scored, assisted by Victoria Barris. The ball was touched home off a cross from the right flank.

The fourth and final goal of the game was scored about 15 minutes later by freshman forward Alana Montreal assisted by Caitlyn Dabagian and Marika Laurendeau. Dabagian kicked it into the box that found its way to Montreal and then into the goal.

The Golden Knights out shot Nyack on goal 12 to 2 partly because of their relentless defense. Senior defender, Totianyu Guadalope and sophomore Nia Brown were a big part of the effort to hold Nyack scoreless.

“I work very well with Nia Brown,” said Guadalope, “I’m usually the person that drops off and she usually grabs the player and sometimes we switch. It’s just a lot of talking, so one person goes, we always have each other’s back.”

Another imposing stat from Saint Rose was their 15-0 ratio in corners. Their ability to get behind NYACK throughout the game was a key factor, according to Head Coach Laurie Darling Gutheil.

“The girls’ mentality was to be aggressive, be intense, and take advantage of every opportunity,” said Gutheil. Saint Rose also wanted to “create corners, and get great flank service across the face of the goal.”

Rounding out the stellar play from Saint Rose was their four goalies who were all inserted in the game at some point. They combined for two total saves throughout the match.
Laurendeau led the unit off followed by Meghan Hake at the end of the first half. Chloe Borasky came in about 10 minutes into the second period and was replaced by Madison Taylor toward the end of the game.

“I thought all of our goalies did great. All of our goalies got to play. They all had their own moments where we were proud of them,” said Guadalope.

The Golden Knights are playing Pace University at home on Wednesday. This upcoming game is pivotal for Saint Rose in their standings for the Northeastern-10 Conference.

“We also need to have a head to head win against them for consideration for the NCAA tournament. Pace is going to be the most important game of the year,” said Gutheil.
