The View from Venus: What’s Up With Women’s Initiative? Time is as Good as a Calendar

While everyone transitions into Fall and the unexpected things it can bring – like the hot and humid weather more reminiscent of late April – we thought it was high time that we inform you of what Women’s Initiative has in the works for the rest of the semester. Is this everything we have planned? Certainly not!

First, this Friday (September 30th) we are heading over to Saint Anne’s Institute for a girl’s movie night. As many of you may know, Saint Anne’s is a place for female teenagers who have encountered rough patches in their life and have nowhere else to turn. Although Saint Anne’s provides academic and extracurricular enrichment, aside from visitors like the Saint Rose/Saint Anne’s mentors, the girls do not get a lot of outside interaction with positive female role models. As a result, Women’s Initiative teamed up with Vista AmeriCorps to provide a night of relaxed fun for all involved!

Next, we hope to continue our tradition of our third annual Love Your Body Late Knight event! In honor of National Love Your Body Month in October, we will be promoting the necessity for positive body images for men and women through a variety of fun activities in the main lounge! As always, nothing is set in stone just yet, but things are coming along for this event. The one thing we need to make it work is YOU! Just stop by on Thursday, October 13th from 7-11 in the main lounge to fish for compliments, listen to positive music, do yoga and more! Henna may also be involved!

Concurrently, throughout October fellow e-board member, Abby, will present a four-part series addressing rape culture. How does society view and respond to incidents of rape? Is it really the girl’s fault for dressing “inappropriately?” Do the prevention programs actually do what they intend to, or do they actually prevent society from properly educating today’s youth on how to thwart rape before it happens? These are but a few of the questions and concerns Abby will address, and rest assured, she will discuss much, much more.

Then, in November, the Women’s Initiative is really excited to re-introduce Grace, our founder, for a guest editorial! At this point, the content of her article has not been determined yet, but please look forward to it! Knowing Grace, it will most likely be an upbeat reflection on the founding, vision and progress of the group, but again, knowing Grace, it truly could be about anything!

Finally, another future project is a cyber safety event geared towards practical and realistic tips for cyber safety. In a world with popular dating and social media sites, it is impossible to remain completely anonymous on the internet like it was ten years ago. Thus, how can women protect themselves when they are the demographic most (violently) targeted online? Stay tuned for more concrete information!

Thanks for reading about a few of our upcoming events! Hope to see you there!
