We Love The Earth

“We love the Earth. It is our planet. We love the Earth. It is our home.” These are not the lyrics that one would expect from music in this time period. Rapper and comedian, Lil Dicky had broken that expectation with his new song, “Earth” that came out on April 19, just in time for Earth Day on April 22.

“I’m so excited. I’ve really never been more excited for anything in my life,” he said in an Instagram video before the song released.

He teased the song in another video with the names of the most popular celebrities in music and movies such as Justin Bieber, Ariana Grande, Halsey, Zac Brown, Brendon Urie, Miley Cyrus, Wiz Khalifa, Snoop Dogg, Kevin Hart, Adam Levine, Shawn Mendes, Charlie Puth, Sia, Hailee Steinfeld, Lil Jon, Rita Ora, Miguel, Katy Perry, Lil Yachty, Ed Sheeran, Leonardo Dicaprio, Meghan Trainor, Joel Embiid, Tory Lanez, John Legend, Bad Bunny, Psy, Kris Wu, Backstreet Boys, Benny Blanco and Cashmere Cat.

This led fans (not just fans of Lil Dicky, but also fans of the featured celebrities) to believe that this was going to be a star studded music video but when the video actually came out, they were in for a surprise.

The video starts off with a news report of “rapidly spreading wildfires” in California and cuts to a dirty looking city with trash everywhere on the ground. Young boys knock over a trash can without looking back to pick it up until one boy finds a book and opens it. The book leads to an animated version of the Earth where the world is without poor climate change and pollution.

Throughout the video, an animated version of Lil Dicky is traveling the world and looking at the great aspects of nature all around the world such as the jungle, farms, beaches, oceans, mountains, deserts, the South Pole, and more. The celebrity features are spread throughout the video as each person is a different version of a living thing like animals, plants, and fungi. For the celebrities with more recognizable voices, it is fairly easy to tell where they come in and what they are introducing themselves as.
The third verse is the part of the song with the most meaningful lyrics. “These days, it’s like we don’t know how to act. All these shootings, pollution, we under attack on ourselves. Like, let’s all just chill, respect what we built,” Lil Dicky sings.

“So what we got this land for? What we gotta stand for? Love, and we love the Earth.” In this part of the video, animated Lil Dicky is hugging the entire Earth with his whole body as it poses for the audience to think about what is important in this world.

Bieber’s character of the baboon asks Lil Dicky if they’re going to die and he responds, “You know what, Bieber? We might die. I’m not going to lie to you. I mean, there’s so many people out here who don’t think global warming’s a real thing. You know? We gotta save this planet. We’re being stupid.”

Grande’s character of the zebra chimes in and says, “Unless we get our sh*t together now.”

Lil Dicky is then with Leonardo DiCaprio as he “knows more about the Earth and how we’re f*cking it up than anybody…Let’s raise some money for charity! Any words Leo?”

DiCaprio responds, “This might be my favorite song ever. It’s awesome.”

After the credits, Lil Dicky says, “Honestly everybody, scientists are saying we have about 12 years to turn this environmental crisis around or we’re screwed… Do you want to save the world? Of course you do. Go to WeLoveTheEarth.org to learn how to do it.”

Not only does this song have a cute and important message, but the graphics and animation were also amazing and portrayed the message in an entertaining way that I hope sticks with the audience.

According to DiCaprio, who is not just an actor but also an environmentalist, all profits that come from this music video will go the DiCaprio Foundation, which works to “support innovative projects that protect vulnerable wildlife from extinction, while restoring balance to threatened ecosystems and communities.”
