The movie “The Nun” recently came out in theaters on September 7, 2018. Directed by Corin Hardy, the Nun follows a demonic force named Valak that was introduced to the audience in “The Conjuring 2.” The movie takes place in Romania where a nun takes her life in a suicide when exploring an abbey. Due to finding out news of her death a priest and a novitiate (a person who is a novice in a religious order) is sent to Romania by the Vatican to investigate.

The Nun provides an intriguing intro to capture the audience, but after that the slow narrative drags on and on. The continuous jump scares are predictable and it becomes another horror movie for the cliché books. The characters are tolerable, but the audience can never become attached to them. The movie doesn’t give the characters enough screen time to showcase who they are, and why they are here, so it leaves them bland without any character development. It would have been better if the movie explored its lore and kept its plot consistent. Instead, the Nun only shows herself a few times until she gets ‘scared away’ by the numerous “hellos” in the halls and disappears. The movie relies heavily on the fact that the audience has seen the Nun in “The Conjuring 2” and how she is presented to them as this incredibly evil demon that has been around for years possibly centuries. There is only little backstory present about the nun since most of the facts known are scattered in movies like “The Conjuring 2” and “Annabelle: Creation.”

A positive side note of the movie is the atmosphere and setting which gives off the eerie vibes that interest the viewers. The sound effects are well done and do give a few yelps here and there, but it is over used when most of the time the only sound on the screen is a creaky floor board or the loud “thud” signifying a jump scare. The main focus of the movie which I believe to be are the jump scares do deserve some credit for they are executed well, but once again are predictable.

Overall, the movie The Nun offers flashy special effects but not enough plot or character interest to garner it a high ranking. If people do want to watch The Nun I highly suggest to wait till it comes out on Netflix or some other platform so that you can save money for something more valid.

It might be a fun movie to watch with friends, but if you’re looking for a in depth storyline and character development with creative jump scares then this movie is not for you.
