The Freshman Perspective: My Big Surprise

Nothing in high school prepared me for college. I do not mean that high school was pointless whatsoever, I simply mean that everything my teachers told me I would need to know for college, I have not used thus far.

I suppose, being a freshman, I cannot exactly predict the next few years of college and how much from high school I will need then either, since college alone was quite unpredictable.

We have all heard how hard college is. We have probably heard tons of lectures on how we are “in for a big surprise” when we get to college. I am not naive and I knew that many hours of studying and homework were going to have to be put into being successful in college.

It is true what they say, however, that it is only possible to have two out of three of the following:  a social life, good grades, or sleep. The beginning of college seemed easy. I thought my parents, teachers, and other adults exaggerated the troubles and stress of college; then came the tests.

My friends and I have all discovered that the homework might not be as hard or as long as we thought yet, but that those hours we assumed would be put into homework should be put into studying. I think this is a realization that many students are having. As I spend less time with my friends, I realize I learn more, putting that time to better use. The feeling of acing a test since you know the information so well is such a feeling of accomplishment.

I find myself using different methods of studying for each class, and even for some classes not requiring much studying. Knowing that I need to know this information to be successful in my career encourages me to focus greatly on the information I learn in my CSD (Communication Sciences and Disorders) class.

I can say that college has definitely started to match up to what many adults in my life have told me, but in a way it is much different. I have free time I was told I would never have. It is nice to finally be able to be in charge of my own time, but it is a great responsibility. I, like many others, am enjoying college, but am finding out just what it really is.
