The Freshman Perspective: Laundry Days

When I came to college, I thought one of the biggest obstacles to overcome would be my procrastination on laundry. I was wrong. In fact, regardless of someone’s ability to do their laundry or not, the first thing you need is an open washing machine. These, to my surprise, are scarce. Instead, it appears as if the laundry room has been ransacked by piles and piles of forgotten laundry. This is what happened on September 5, 2011.

As I entered the laundry room in the basement of Brubacher Hall, I could have mistaken it for a clothing drive. One of the massive piles of laundry I saw stood on top of a washing

machine, probably taken out by a student. Not only was this pile of clothes left there from the time I started my laundry until the time I finished it, but the clothes pile was dry from the first time I saw it. A dry pile on top of washing machine. How long had it been there? I thought.

It was left there for at least three more hours… not that I had procrastinated enough with doing my own laundry to last me three hours or anything. I don’t know whether people had forgotten about their laundry, forgotten to time the cycles, or didn’t want their laundry, but I would much rather stop whatever I was doing and get my laundry rather than have someone else’s filthy hands touch my newly washed clothes.

My eyes kept turning their attention towards this monstrosity of a laundry pile. As I crept towards this sloppy pile of laundry while waiting for my own, I noticed some clothes on the top were moving; shifting is a better word. As I retreated to my own washing machine, one of this person’s socks fell on the floor. The creature returned to a rest.

The next time I returned for the dryer, another sock had fallen. It wasn’t until then that I realized this pile was even bigger than I thought it was. I wondered, What exactly is that person wearing now that they have the ability to leave this enormous pile of clothes here for three hours? Another sock fell. I decided to stop my investigation.

My laundry experience was quite eventful that evening of September 5th. I suppose it’ll be my excuse for procrastinating next week on doing my laundry. I hope the day comes when people never leave their clothes behind. A well-timed laundry cycle is all it takes! I’m serious, you should try it sometime! Please?
