The Chronicle Receives Letter from the Loyal White Knights of the Ku Klux Klan

A letter to the editor from the Loyal White Knights of the Ku Klux Klan was retrieved from The Chronicle mailbox in the Student Association office at approximately 10 a.m. Wednesday.

The letter came in an envelope on which the College’s address was hand-written. The words “Student Newspaper” were stamped on the front. A Tampa and Saint Petersburg postmark were visible on the top right corner next to an American flag stamp.

The letter itself was printed on paper with a “Loyal White Knights of the Ku Klux Klan” letterhead, and was a response to a newly published novel called The Slave Players.

The Chronicle Editorial staff has decided not to publish the letter because of its sensitive nature.

    • This is news because a local newspaper in the capital region was recently contacted by the KKK and ran cover stories that alleged a local presence. This coverage has sparked debates about the role of the media in balancing coverage of of a newsworthy issue and giving legitimacy to a hate group. Opponents of this paper’s coverage accuse it of sensationalism and lending credence to anonymous bigotry, while its defenders contend that remaining silent about the KKK’s efforts denies the reality that the group is becoming more visible today than it has been in decades.
