When Paul Caron took over the reign as head coach of Saint Rose women’s tennis this past August, only four players had signed up for the team and they needed at least eight.

“Consequently went into a mini marketing mode to attract current students to join and contribute to our team,” said Caron. “Over the past four weeks we have welcomed three new players to our team and we can somewhat enjoy a sigh of relief for now that is.”

Caron took over a program that is coming off one of their best seasons with a trip to the NE-10 Conference tournament.

“Paul Caron has done a great job so far as head coach,” said Jennifer Crego, a junior on the team. “He cares a lot for the team and all of the players on it.”

So far this season, the Golden Knights have post a 1-1 record with a 6-3 win against Franklin Pierce and a 3-6 lost to Saint Anselm. Crego leads the team in wins this season with a 2-0 record.

“He is focused on making this another successful year and building up the program to insure the success of the team in the years to come,” said Crego.

“Our current team is seven players deep, characterized by hard working players who love to be outdoors playing tennis and making new friendships,” said Caron. “All of the current players have played high school tennis and simply want to continue to compete and grow the interest of tennis on campus.”

Caron is a USPTR certified tennis teacher with a doctorate degree from George Mason University. Prior to coaching here at Saint Rose, Caron served as the girl’s tennis at the Albany Academies and lead them to their first section II title ever.

Caron also did two-years coaching stint at Governor Dummer Academy in Byfield, Ma. Caron, as well as, spent five years at New Hampshire College as the women’s tennis coach.

“Coach Caron’s enthusiasm for tennis and genuine concern for his student-athletes is immediately evident when you meet him,” said athletic director Cathy Haker. “He has tremendous positive energy and he wants to continue to move this program forward.”

When asked what made Caron standout from the other nine applicants, Haker talked about Caron’s solid background and experience from previous colleges experiences, as well as, his commitment and love for the sport.

The women’s tennis team lost half of their players due to graduation this past season. Still, they hope to build off of last year’s success and compete in every match.

“Regardless of experience level, if you enjoy tennis, love the fun of competition and richness of friendships then Saint Rose tennis is for you,” said Caron.

Caron is still looking for players to join the women’s tennis team. If anyone is interested, please contact coach Paul Caron at 518-877-8153 or e-mail him at caronp@saintrose.edu.
