Something Sour, Something Sweet: Miss Conception (2008)

Ah Babies! Little cute balls of chubbiness are all women need, right? Wrong! Some ladies should not be mothers, and this miserable movie proves it. Miss Conception tries to play on the overused theme of “My Biological Clock is ticking and I want babies now!” It fails horribly, and what the audience gets is a movie that tries to take things that aren’t funny and squeeze pathetic laughs out of them.

Heather Graham (Doing an atrocious British accent) plays Georgina, a woman who has the improbable job of owning a construction company full of buff cockney Brits. After seeing her boyfriend’s sister’s baby, Georgina realizes that she is running out of time to have one of her own. Being the greedy woman that she is, Georgina dumps her boyfriend the moment he says he’s not sure if he’s ready to be a father.

She goes to an awkward French Doctor, who nasally tells her that she has one egg left and she has only four days until it’s gone. Now this whole premise is stupid. A woman is born with thousands of eggs. She doesn’t run out, they just get old and die. But I digress. Georgina naturally freaks out and wonders how she is going to find a man to sleep with her, because she refused the logical choice of a sperm bank “I don’t want sperm, I want a baby,” she whines. You need one to get the other, Lady!  She and her stereotypically New Age best friend and their stereotypical gay male friend try to find a solution.

The rest of the movie is Georgina trying and failing to get a man to sleep with her. It’s hard to sympathize with a woman who wants to have a child, but acts like one herself. It’s disgusting to watch how desperate she is. On her quest to find a willing man, she tries to seduce a man at a funeral, and a Jersey Shore reject male stripper.

When she finally runs out of options she begs her Gay friend to give her his man juice for baby making.  When he says that he can’t do it, Georgina goes nuts.  She demands that he do it and she goes and tackles him and pulls his pants off.  Wow, who thought this joke would be funny. It’s trying to make attempted rape humorous! It supposed to be hilarious, because it’s a woman trying to get in the pants of a gay man. Because abuse is okay when it’s female on male! Now think, how people would react if it was a man trying to force a Lesbian to give him a child?! After this scene this movie lost any chance of redemption.

Miss Conception ends when Georgina’s boyfriend comes back and knocks her up. We are supposed to happy that she got what she wanted, but we are stuck with a sickening feeling that a child will be born into that horrible environment.

I would never recommend this movie to anyone with taste. The plot is contrived and the characters are flat and stereotyped. The gay male friend is a fashion designer, and every bad gay stereotype is used and there is a mean joke about a transgendered woman. The film tries to create genuine pathos, when the best friend admits to having an abortion. This scene is very awkward and never serves any plot purpose.

Never ever watch this movie. If you want to see a good movie that deals with a woman trying to get pregnant, watch Baby Mama. It’s got funny ladies Tina Fey and Amy Pohler in the lead roles. It’s got a better plot and a thing called character development in it. Watch Baby Mama and don’t touch Miss Conception with a ten foot pole.
