Last Friday, the number one ranked Golden Knights took on UMass Lowell in a NE-10 match up that ended in a 1-1 tie.

The Golden Knights were slow in the early going. “We came out flat in the first twelve minutes,” said head coach Laurie Darling Gutheil.

Not even three minutes into the game, the Golden Knights found themselves in a 1-0 deficit, when the River Hawks’ freshman forward Brittany Russo put a shot in the top right corner of the net.

Lowell had a bit of momentum after this, but the Golden Knights kept them out of the net and began to pick it up. About fifteen minutes into the first half, Golden Knights senior forward Gianna D’Errico got the ball running down the field and delivered a strong shot off that went off the crossbar and out of play.

With about 25 minutes left in the half, freshman forward Brittany Barry came into the game for the Golden Knights. When Barry came into the game, she brought a faster pace of play. The Golden Knights moved the ball better, making crisper passes, and moved it up the field faster.

With 6:50 remaining in the half, Barry got the ball running down the right side of the field. She was nearly parallel to the post when she curved an amazing shot into the back of the net to knot the score at 1-1.

For Barry, it was her sixth goal in just her fourth game at the collegiate level. She credited her success, and that of the team, to the playmaking of the midfielders and the defenders.

“They have done a great job at keeping the ball away from our net and moving down the field,” said Barry.

For the remainder of the half, Saint Rose dominated and the ball seemingly never reached the Golden Knights’ defensive side of the field, but the score stayed 1-1 going into the half.

Within the first six minutes of the second half, the River Hawks’ junior forward Keanna Santos had three good scoring chances. One sailed high over the net, but the other two required saves by Jessica Gerski to keep the game tied.

About 9 minutes into the second half, Barry came back into the game for Saint Rose and again brought a faster pace of play. The game picked up at this point, with the ball going on a long back-and-forth between the two teams. This game would end up going into overtime.
There was more solid play from both teams in the first overtime period. The only solid scoring chance belonged to Saint Rose’s sophomore Carmelina Puopolo, who shot one to the far left side of the net, only to be knocked away by Lowell’s goalkeeper, Jill Carlson.

In the second overtime, each team played well enough to earn two shots on legitimate scoring chances, however, neither team could push the ball across and earn the win.

With the tie, the Golden Knights move to 3-0-1.  They have a quick turnaround, having to play at Southern New Hampshire University on Sunday afternoon.

When asked if the double overtime would affect the Golden Knights’ preparation for that game, Coach Gutheil, simply said, “They’re going to be in ice bath tonight and two ice baths tomorrow.”
