Golden Knights Rundown

The Saint Rose women’s basketball team entered last Wednesday’s home game against the Bentley Falcons on a two-game losing streak, they looked to right the ship in front of the home crowd but could not get the win, falling 76-56.

The Falcons are ranked 20th in the recent D2SIDA National Poll and started the game on a 23-7 run which pulled them away from Saint Rose. Sophomore Becca Townes led the Golden Knights offense with 17 points while junior Nina Fedullo had 15 of her own.

On Saturday, the team had their annual Coaches Against Cancer game and took on the Southern New Hampshire Penmen, but they lost in a close one, 74-68. The Golden Knights went into the half with a ten point lead, but the Penmen clawed back throughout the second half to take the lead and hold onto it. Fedullo powered the Saint Rose offense with her eighth double double of the season. She had 21 points and 16 rebounds. Behind her was senior Leah Dollard with 15 points and Townes had 13.

The two losses drops their record to 7-11 and they will look to snap their four-game losing skid on the road Wednesday against the Saint Anselm Hawks.

The men’s basketball team also entered last Wednesday on a two-game losing streak. They took on Bentley and lost 97-74. The Falcons shot nearly 50 percent on the night to secure victory. Junior Adam Anderson 22 points and seven rebounds to lead the Saint Rose offense while sophomore Sekou Sylla 21 points and nine rebounds. Sylla also went 9/10 from the free throw line. The freshmen pair of Manasseh Small and Cartier Bowman had ten points each.

The team had their Coaches Against Cancer game against Southern New Hampshire in front of the home crowd Saturday afternoon but they could not get the win, losing 92-80. The Golden Knights were down by as many as 22 points at one point and they cut it back to within nine but they could not get any closer as the Penmen came away with victory. Sylla led the Golden Knights offense with 26 points and 14 rebounds to which was good enough for his 15th double double of the season. Bowman had 17 points and Anderson along with freshman Josh McGettigan had 15 each.

The two losses puts their record down to 4-16 and they will be back in action on Wednesday when they travel to take on Saint Anselm.

This past Saturday was Senior Day for the Saint Rose men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams. The team squared off with the Saint Micheal’s Purple Knights and both teams came away with wins in front of the home crowd. The men won by a score of 115-108 while the women won 142-72.

The men’s team was boosted by key victories by seniors Aleksandar Stosik and Charles Nicholas. Stosik won the 100 yard freestyle and the 200 yard individual medley in times of 47.68 seconds and 2:02.55 respectively. Nicholas took the wins in the 100 yard butterfly and the 100 yard breaststroke, clocking in at 51.15 seconds and 1:04.66. Sophomores Eric Romero Gomez and Zachary LaForest teammed up with Stosik and Nicholas to take home the 200 yard medley relay event with a time of 1:41.73. Romero Gomez had a solo win in the 100 yard backstroke with a time of 57.05 seconds.

The seniors recognized prior to the meet for the men were Stosik, Nicholas, Roko Jelavic, Andres Martinez, and Isa Yolbarsov.

On the women’s side, senior Gabrialla Ficano had two event wins, first in the 100 yard freestyle with a time of 57.57 seconds and then in the 100 yard breaststroke 1:06.42. Junior Colleen Quaglia also had two wins of her own. She hit the wall first in both the 100 yard backstroke and the 200 yard individual medley with times of 59.53 seconds and 2:11.91 respectively. Freshman Tierra Damico won both the one and three meter dives with scores of 209.40 and 198.45. Other wins for the team were recorded by junior Olivia Stebbins-Hopkins who won the 50 yard freestyle with a time of 26.63 seconds. Sophomore Emily Miles took the 200 yard freestyle in 2:02.93. Freshman Marta Lekovic won the 500 yard freestyle with a time of 5:36.55 while freshman Brenna Hayes took the 1,000 yard freestyle, touching the wall in 11:24.15.

The seniors recognized for the women’s team were Ficano and Nicole McIntosh.

Both teams will now be off until February 6 as they prepare for the NE-10 Conference Championships which runs from the 6th to the 9th in Worcester, MA.
