Female Students Stand Up to Social Injustices

Students from three campus organizations came together on Friday to stand up to social injustices across the world.

Members of the English Club, Identity and the newly formed Purely Positive Women of Purpose (PPWOP) stood on the quad at The College of Saint Rose for two hours, holding signs and listening to music.

The goal of the gathering was to bring awareness about what’s going on, and to let students know that the groups are there for them, according to sophomore Breanne Colon, a founding member of PPWOP.

Daria Lee, also a sophomore, stood in support for the duration of the gathering.

“I’m not in any of the clubs,” Lee said. “They just need help.”

Lee added that “love, peace, and happiness” were all they needed, channeling some of the Bob Marley music that played during the gathering.

Ashly Guzman, the other founding member of PPWOP, said the ladies at Saint Rose need to unite and uplift each other.

“We’re here standing up for women on campus,” Guzman said.

PPWOP has six Executive Board members and around 20 general members, according to Guzman.

“Ken Scott is our faculty advisor. He fully supports our peaceful protest,” Guzman said.

She added that the gathering represented breaking down the barriers between women and society.

The rest of the students who gathered included Christina Romeo, president of the English Club. Romeo has been a consistant voice on campus this year, standing strong with the faculty as they continue their fight against the cuts handed down by Saint Rose administration in May of 2015.
